Council News & Information

A School Council Primer

This primer briefly describes how the St. Monica School council functions. Further information can also be found in the St. Monica Catholic School Council Constitution, and the Ontario Ministry of Education publication: School Councils: A Guide for Members. Records of CSC meetings and finances are also kept in the school office, and are available for examination by all parents upon request.

Who is the School Council?

The School Council is an stakeholder's advisory composed of up to 12 elected parents, the Principal, 2 other staff members, a parish representative, and a community representative.

What is the School Council's role?

The School Council provides ideas and opinions to assist the Principal in making decisions on educational issues affecting our children. We support and guide the staff to ensure that our children find challenge, encouragement, and security at St. Monica School. Many of the activities our children currently enjoy would not be possible without the support of our school community.

Who can attend School Council meetings?

All parents are welcome at our meetings. Although only elected or appointed council members can vote on issues put before the council, we are eager to hear the thoughts, opinions, and concerns of all parents at our school. Attending our meetings gives everyone an opportunity to become involved in the school life of our children. It is also a great way to learn more about what's going on at St. Monica's, and about how our school is impacted by any changes to school board or government policies.

When are the meetings?

The School Council meets in the Learning Commons at St. Monica School at 6:30 p.m. on the first Monday of each month during the school year. We will not meet in December nor will we meet in March.

All of our parents are welcome!

OCSB Parent Involvement Committee (PIC)

The Ottawa Catholic School Board Parent Involvement Committee (PIC) is a provincially mandated committee made up of parents, a trustee, a principal and the Director of Education. The purpose of PIC is to support, encourage and enhance parent engagement at the school board level in order to improve student achievement and well-being. The parent members of the OCSB PIC are appointed by CSPA.

Learn more about OCSB's PIC on the PIC page of the Board website.

The Catholic School Parents’ Association (CSPA)
is a volunteer group representing the parents in our school board. We are a resource for school councils and the parent community for information on local and provincial education issues. Through our website, Twitter, and email newsletters we provide updates on education in Ottawa & Ontario; plus we share great tips, resources and information to help parents support their children in school. All parents are welcome and encouraged to join our e-mail list, follow us on Twitter or attend CSPA monthly meetings.

Visit the CSPA website to learn more about CSPA and the work we do to support parents and their children in our schools.
